In this scenario based lesson for SPED teachers, learners will be headed to a local furniture store to complete this Community Based Instruction. Learners will be able to identify types of furniture to match a space, describe the importance of furnishing an apartment or living space, reflect on housing options for adulthood, practice mapping skills by identifying and labeling necessary items that fit into a particular space, observe & record the price of furniture items at full cost, measure and record the length & width of various items.

Terms of Use

Version #1: In the BEFORE activity (prior to your CBI), learners will cut/paste furniture images into a blank living room and bedroom based on a visually provided scenario. In the DURING activity, learners will cut/paste the chosen images from their before activity and search for their preferred items at the furniture store. They will check off the item once found. Learners will ask a salesperson questions related to sales and delivery of furniture items. For the AFTER activity, learners will answer circle review questions and participate in a class & partner discussion.

Version #2: In the BEFORE activity, learners will draw furniture items based on a scenario to furnish a living room and bedroom. Examples are provided for learners. In the DURING activity, learners will search for preferred furniture items based on the ones listed from their before activity at the furniture store. Learners will record the cost of items and engage in a conversation with a salesperson to discuss sales and delivery of items. For the AFTER activity, learners will answer review questions focused on total cost per room & personal housing plans. Learners will participate in class & partner discussions. This version incorporates a mix of visual circle responses and fill in answers.

Version #3: In the BEFORE activity, learners will draw furniture items based on a scenario to furnish a living room and bedroom. They are required to stay within the dimensions provided and will need to be thoughtful of the placement of items in each room. In the DURING activity, learners will search for preferred furniture items - recording the cost, length & width of each item at the store. Learners will engage in a conversation with a salesperson discussing sales and delivery of items. For the AFTER activity, learners will answer review questions focused on total cost & descriptive words as a reflection of the activity. Learners will participate in class & partner discussions. This version requires open-ended & conclusive thinking regarding adulthood, sizes of space & cost effectiveness.
