About Me!
Welcome to Community Based Classroom, LLC! I am so glad you are here. My name is Olivia McGuire. As a former SPED transition & high school teacher, nonprofit executive director and career advocate, it excites me to have the opportunity to create Community Based Instruction lessons and activities for your learners. Check out this blog to learn more about me!
Welcome to Community Based Classroom! My background includes 8+ years experience as a High School & Transition Special Education Teacher, Career Advocate and Executive Director of a nonprofit organization. I have had the opportunity to directly impact neurodivergent learners ages 14-64 to support and foster the growth of independence, employment skills and community access.
Now, as a professional working mom, it excites me to have the opportunity to develop Community Based Instruction for your learners!
Today we unconsciously create barriers by segregating people based on their value we believe they can bring to our community. My teaching style helps to remove those barriers so that individuals can be their true and best selves.
My highest honor is the feedback I’ve received from those whom I have directly served.
Teaching awards include:
Shining Star - School Inclusion Award
Value Award for Exemplary Performance
Through my work in the nonprofit space, in less than a two year span, our organization served over 100 learners - building independence as they worked through a Practical Foundations Program. Our impact was evidenced by a 34% increase in planning/executing tasks and a 26% increase in decision making skills.
I grew up with a passion for people - specifically leading me to support and advocate for neurodivergent learners. My education includes an undergraduate degree in Special Education from the University of Northern Colorado - Greeley, and a Master’s in Special Education with a concentration in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education from Colorado University - Denver. I have served in various volunteer roles, including the Foundation Fighting Blindness and Best Buddies. I kick-started my career with a volunteer position in Namibia, Africa, teaching Information and Communication Technology to over 600 learners and 40 staff.
Similar to the individuals whom I am developing resources for today, I too am continuously learning!
I am a proud Colorado native who loves adventure. White water rafting, skydiving and summiting our highest mountains (over 14,000 ft) are a few adventures that keep me geared up and passionate for the next. More regularly, you can catch me hanging out with my two dogs, husband and baby girl.
